According to statistics from 1995, 50.7 percent of Koreans follow a certain religion. Of those:
- Buddhists numbered 10 321 012 or 45.6%
- Protestants numbered 8 760 336 or 38.7%
- Catholics numbered 2 950 730 or 13.1%
- Confucianists numbered 210 927 or 0.9%
Like most other countries, this is not necessarily a reflection of the values of individuals in Korea, but rather the way the country has been structured. A child of a protestant, for example, will be considered a protestant as well whether he/she believes in a higher being or not.
